THE RESISTANCE is the translated title of the film THE CREATOR. This science fiction film marks the beginning of a strong trend that would become evident in the coming years. It is directed by Gareth Edwards, who co-wrote it with Chris Weitz. Edwards is the director of 2016's ROGUE ONE, one of the most interesting entries in the STAR WARS cinematic universe. Weitz, for his part, directed the first AMERICAN PIE in 1999 and the second installment of the TWILIGHT saga in 2009. Therefore, it's no surprise that THE RESISTANCE is a film with enough qualities to connect with the viewer.

THE RESISTANCE incorporates elements from genre classics like BLADE RUNNER (1982), the original STAR WARS trilogy (1977), and even THE MATRIX (also from 1999). In THE RESISTANCE, the oppressed fight against overwhelming military power, machines become more human than humans themselves, and a messiah emerges as the solution to all injustices. The film engages with these landmarks without any sense of originality. Nor are these the first films to employ such themes; their origin lies primarily in literature, where science fiction and adventure stories first emerged as genres.

THE RESISTANCE succeeds particularly well in referencing another cinematic touchstone. Upon seeing it, one immediately recalls APOCALYPSE NOW from 1979, set during the Vietnam War. THE RESISTANCE premieres in 2023, a year marked by turbulent tensions between Western powers and the "East," represented by China. This context allows for the inclusion of artificial intelligence as a key element in the story. Furthermore, it resonates with the spirit of revolt that the world has experienced since the start of the pandemic. Thus, regardless of box office success, which certainly matters, or critical reception, which might unsettle its creators, THE RESISTANCE will be remembered as the film that, in 2023, successfully revitalized classic science fiction archetypes, reconnecting them with the central dramas of the third decade of the 21st century.
