TWISTERS, A FILM OF ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS

If you think the 2024 TWISTERS is a sequel, you might be right. Although, to be honest, you don't need to have seen the 1996 film to enjoy the 21st-century version. But it's good for a film buff's soul to remember some of the films from that year, against which TWISTER managed to become the second highest-grossing film. It was surpassed by INDEPENDENCE DAY, a science fiction film, but there were releases of all kinds, such as MATILDA, JERRY MACGUIRE, THESIS, and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Among them all, TWISTER, without the "S" at the end, managed to stand out: It resonated with audiences because tornadoes are still relevant today, and because its visual and sound effects were impressive, but above all because of the passionate love story between the characters played by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton.

TWISTERS, in the plural, has an impeccable opening sequence that holds nothing back and delivers, generating for the protagonist the necessary dramatic tension to face the life-threatening challenges that await her in the following minutes. The previous film, from 1996, also featured a woman as the main character, and this one follows suit, but the devastating element of the tornadoes is merciless from the very beginning, surpassing the opening of the previous film. In the 90s, digital effects were a novelty, but by 2024, that tool is insufficient to capture the viewer's attention. It is then that human drama must take control of the script, and TWISTERS knows how to do it. Pure craftsmanship? Perhaps, but that's not a flaw, nor is it the norm; not all works are so competent at achieving this, while TWISTERS captivates from the very first scene.

But while TWISTERS, with its "S" at the end, stands out for its opening, it's at the end where its quality truly shines. And that's when seeing it in a movie theater becomes essential. TWISTERS is "CINEMA" meant to be experienced on the big screen. How can I explain this without spoiling the film? The important thing is that you understand that although the film makes those who haven't experienced a tornado feel like they're inside it, the final sequence largely takes place in the movie theater of the town struck by the tornado. The characters end up trapped inside, and that's where the homage to disaster films comes in. The audience member will see how the film being projected becomes the tragedy that befalls the town. Thus, cinema, as a concept, becomes reality, and reality is transformed into a film. For posterity, that ending of TWISTERS will be its greatest contribution to 21st-century cinephilia.
