Cannes International Film Festival

In May, one of the most important film festivals in the world takes place: the Cannes International Film Festival. It was created at the initiative of Jean Zay, Minister of Public Education and Fine Arts, who wanted to establish an international cultural event in France capable of rivaling the Venice Film Festival.

In the words of Thierry Frémaux, Artistic Director of the Festival: “Cannes is a collective asset that each of us, from wherever we are and in our own way, builds stone by stone, year after year. And it is by never ceasing to question it, to modify its function, and to provoke commentary that we will do it the greatest service. Firmly anchored in its history, Cannes is receptive to new ideas. It is everything different that contributes to enriching it: that is why this festival is our festival.”.

This year, Steven Spielberg will be the jury director for the feature film section, accompanied by Daniel Auteuil, Vidya Balan, Naomi Kawase, Nicole Kidman, Ang Lee, Cristian Mungiu, Lynne Ramsay and Christoph Waltz.

The following films are competing for the Palme d'Or:

In addition, in the category dedicated to the most atypical films, called Un Certain Regard, a total of 18 films will compete, among which stand out THE BLING RING by Sofia Coppola, AS I LAY DIYING, by James Franco and LA JAULA DE ORO, by the Spanish filmmaker Diego Quemada-Diez.

On the other hand, the film by Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, THE GREAT GATSBY, has been chosen to be screened during the opening of the 66th Cannes Film Festival, which is held at the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals, in the Official Selection Out of Competition.
