THE HOBBIT: What do the critics say?

We share with you some reviews from websites about THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. The film, which is still showing in some countries, is generating a lot of buzz.

«Martin Freeman does a good job as Bilbo Baggins, although he doesn’t face too many challenges from the script. The same goes for veteran Ian McKellen, who could play a sleeping Gandalf and still do a fine job. It is, once again, Gollum who steals the show. Although the character appears for no more than twenty minutes, Andy Serkis does an exceptional job and, as with his portrayal of Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, his performance should be recognized with an award, even though the character was created digitally.”.«

«"First, it's pure action and adventure. Second, it has an advantage over The Lord of the Rings because the plot of The Hobbit is much simpler: it's essentially the story of a group of professionals who set out on a dangerous mission. There are none of the twists and complexities Tolkien employed in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. What we have here is Middle-earth's version of the classic hero's journey tale, as described by Joseph Campbell in his book The Masks of the Hero: Psychoanalysis of Myth. Or, if you prefer, Middle-earth's version of the classic plot of legendary cinematic gems like The Dirty Dozen, The Guns of Navarone, or The Magnificent Seven. Except here, the protagonists aren't World War II commandos or gunslingers from the Wild West (although there are many Western elements, both visual and narrative, scattered throughout this first installment of The Hobbit trilogy), but rather a company of dwarf warriors led by the wizard Gandalf the Grey." Another point in its favor this time is that the emulator of Joseph Campbell's hero is Bilbo Baggins, not Frodo. Bilbo incorporates humorous elements where Frodo was prey to a tragic sense of his life. Bilbo sets out on an adventure.»

«"An adventure brimming with danger, excitement, and plenty of humor. Despite its length, the two and a half hours fly by. A magnificent cast and splendid technical execution. As "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" begins and we see Bilbo (Ian Holm) and Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) at Bilbo's home, a feeling of joy washes over us at returning to Middle-earth. After the brilliant adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings," Peter Jackson revisits the novel that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote before the aforementioned trilogy and immerses us in another adventure full of danger, excitement, and, above all, a great deal of fun."“
