In 2012, comic book movies dominated the box office worldwide. According to Box Office Mojo, the top two spots were occupied by... THE AVENGERS AND BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT
THE AVENGERS, the American film that brought together Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Captain America to fight Loki and his desire to destroy the planet, grossed a total of $1.512 billion worldwide. These numbers sound even more astronomical considering it only cost $220 million to make; a staggering figure for independent cinema, though possible within the realm of mainstream films.
Alongside this film is BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, which, according to Box Office Mojo, grossed a total of $1.08 billion. The American film, based on the DC Comics series BATMAN and directed by Christopher Nolan, had its official release in the United States and Spain on July 20, 2012, and on July 27 in Latin America.
The film, which is the final installment of the trilogy dedicated to the Batman character, tells the story of the fight against Bane, a masked terrorist whose plans put Gotham City at risk and force Bruce to return from his exile.
