What is DESPICABLE ME 4? It's a comedy film produced by Illumination. It's part of a franchise, and this film is the sixth. In DESPICABLE ME, the character is "bad" because he's naturally evil; nothing forces him to be, and the audience grows fond of him when they discover that his wickedness is betrayed by his noble heart. These minions, and indeed all the films in the saga, but especially the minions, rely on physical comedy. This means they elicit laughter through scenes where the characters hit each other, play tricks on one another to make fun of the other, and all without any physical harm. It's similar to what's seen in the films of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. A particular detail, and perhaps an homage, is that the minions speak, or rather make short noises that combine with words and are reminiscent of another great of comedic cinema, Jacques Tati. Tati's characters, created by the French artist who rose to prominence in the mid-20th century, could speak, but they didn't; they made comments using French-accented sounds, much like the Minions.
