\nKINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, or better yet, PLANET OF THE APES: NEW KINGDOM as it's titled in Latin America, and also as KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, as it's called in Spain, is a film released in May 2024 and becomes the third reboot of the saga about the devolution of humans and the Earth dominated by apes. The origin of it all is the iconic 1968 film starring Charlton Heston. The next reboot was released in 2011, with James Franco as the scientist responsible for the tragedy that ends human civilization. This third one, from 2024, jumps 300 years into the future and sets out to meet the challenge of capturing the audience's attention, being the tenth installment in the series. In one film or another, the underlying protagonist is panic. In them, the public sees its own face, sometimes hairy like an ape, at other times beardless like an infant, but always on the way to becoming the victim of the moment.<\/p>\n

PLANET OF THE APES: NEW KINGDOM represents the fear of extinction that appears at different points in history and in different guises. Thus, in antiquity, the specter of "judgment day" was written in sacred texts, while during the second half of the 20th century, nuclear holocaust is the constant threat haunting the entire world, as reflected in the first film of the saga and the two that followed. The most recent films take as their starting point a pandemic that causes humans to regress to such an extent that they are replaced by apes. Almost as terrible as the end of the species is the horror of being displaced by those whom humanity considers inferior: the apes. To this pandemonium is added the scourge of guilt. In the eyes of humans, the root of the entire problem in Planet of the Apes is science, which, in fulfilling its objectives, leads the world to its doom.<\/p>\n

So, why watch PLANET OF THE APES: NEW KINGDOM? Because it's the universal drama of a son trying to assume his father's leadership role? Because it addresses the oppression of the weak by the strong? Because it warns of the limits that science ignores, disregarding humanity's survival? The PLANET OF THE APES saga is distinguished by its flawed characters. While there are shady characters who enjoy causing harm, those who truly shine are the ones who believe they are doing good, even when they are wrong. This is the essence of the series' success: the characters strive to repair what is broken, and the audience holds onto the hope of a better future in the next film. PLANET OF THE APES: NEW KINGDOM is not condescending cinema; what it depicts is horrific, but it leaves a small crack through which light can seep in to battle the darkness.<\/p>\n
