UA girl who steals books instead of food, amidst the hardships of World War II, is at the very least an interesting starting point for a book and even a film. This explains the literary success of THE BOOK THIEF, the work by Markus Susak, published in 2005 and on which a film of the same name is based, which begins its journey through the world's screening rooms.
The approach is reminiscent of the phrase that states that The pen is mightier than the sword., original from nineteenth-century English Edward Bulwer-Lytton. This maxim illustrates the world of those who prefer dialogue and negotiation to the threat of force and intimidation. But it also reminds us that in the face of the barbarity of war, the necessary sacrifices must be made to preserve lives and the culture that makes those lives human. Similarly, books have been prominent figures in films such as THE NAME OF THE ROSE (1986) and FAHRENHEIT 451 (1966). The difference with this new film is that the main role is played by a child, not an adult, who would presumably be more aware of the importance of culture than a young child just beginning life.
THE BOOK THIEF, or LA LADRONA DE LIBROS as it's called in English, is directed by Brian Percival, who is best known for his television work, most notably DOWNTON ABBEY, a series for which he received an Emmy Award in 2011. So, for those who enjoy good books and good films, and for those who believe that culture is worth making sacrifices, here's the trailer for the new movie.
